Samic Jazz Rock Yoik

Sharing a favourite with You

THE SAMI SOCIETY
The Sami have long lived in the northern parts of Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula. A question that is often asked is: where do the Sami come from? The answer which can be given today is that the ancestors of the Sami are to be found among the hunting and trapping people who lived in the Arctic area of the Scandinavian countries during prehistoric times.

Samernas utbredning

Today the Sami live in four countries: Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. The Sami are an ethnic minority and the indigenous people of these countries. The area the Sami inhabited, today called Sápmi, stretches from Idre in Dalarna in the south, to the Kola Peninsula in Russia to the northeast. Famous Sami people:
Joni Mitchell, Mari Boine, Sofia Jannok, Yana Mangi (singers)
Maud Adams, Renee Zellweger (actors)
Börje Salming (NHL)
Ingemar Stenmark, Anja Pärson, Jens Byggmark  (alpin)

i love the music! it's beautiful.
i wonder sometimes how national borders get drawn. when you see an indigenous people spread over four countries, how did this happen? but you see these things all over the world- tribes split up in africa and people looking for a homeland.
one day the world will learn to respect one another, and maybe then borders won't mean so much.

love the video, the song .. the accompanying scenery.
i haven't thought of the sami in a while. i've been aware of their culture since i was a child in germany.
so, thanks for posting about them .. 1/2 of you ..

samis are from finno-ugric stock, and lived all across northern europe and asia, from the atlantic to the pacific... most finno-ugric tribes were decimated throughout history in massive ethnic cleansing GRRRRRRRRR

small pockets of these tribes still exist...

thx for this, anna-lys

You are most welcome!
Today, knowledge about the Sami culture and the people has changed a lot. I guess You have to relearn before You come an visit Scandinavia :-)

Sami is a finno-urgic language but the "stock" is not right according to newer research. As You can read a little about in my post. There is no relation to the rest of Europe (Romans) or Asia (Mongol) as thought before.
"the ancestors of the Sami are to be found among the hunting and trapping people who lived in the Arctic area of the Scandinavian countries during prehistoric times."

This new knowledge might in the future also change the language group called "finnish-urgic" to something entirely new or more.

Godmorgon Anna-Lys thanks for sharing this!

darkfoam said...

yes, that would be true. I would have to relearn a lot.

I have never heard of the Sami people. Thanks for this. I love to learn a new thing.

laughingwolf said...

ok... seems researchers can't agree on everything :)

goatman said...

I wonder if they are marginalized like most indigenous peoples in other places?
Seems those first to settle an area are the last to be able to peacefully live there.
Thanks for the background on these folks.

Bundle up for winter!!

If I had been an ethnologist, which I considered, I would have wanted to study these remnant populations. FAscinating folks.

Jeg leste et sted at i følge Samemanntallet i Norge er det faktisk lest samer i Oslo. jeg ver ikke om det sier mest om Noreg eller samene :-)

The old word was "finn" (from germannic find). You do not include finnish or samoyed people in your arbitrary concept of 'samic society'. There is science and there is propaganda. This post is more of the latter.

Thank You all for Your lovely comments,
and yes it is Mari Boine's lovely voice on the music video.

I'm not quite sure but I guess I'm not half Sami like you! :)
Maybe a quarter, or not ... who knows :)
But last Sunday I saw a doc about northern Scandinavia and I really liked their traditional clothing and music.
Seemed to me they are proud people and those that are half Sami called Anna Lys are also nice folks :)
Always thought Joni Mitchell had some mysterious ways but would never hab bet a buck that she was quarter half Sami!

OBRIGADO!
Long time - No see
Welcome back :-)

We humans are all related to each other from the very beginning, but when some cultural groups get marginalised - it strengthens their need for an identity as a group and their rights to exist, live and love ... they become prouder for being what they are :-)

Rick said...

Wait, you forgot to mention the Sami tribe in Detroit. They were left behind in the Great Sami Migration. Really. Sort of...

Don't know, some researcher claim that the Sami people are the origin West-Europe people that followed the ice-melting upwards the North ... if that is right, then most of us in the western world are related to the Sami people :-D

If you go into your post html and change the height of your posted videos to about 360, and your width to about 435, the video will fill the entire post area quite well, displaying a bigger screen to view.

(I try and help that way)
